Rethinking Neuroprotection in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: Toward Bedside Neuroprotection

Summer is in its last month so it’s time to get back to the NeuroScand grind. And we do so with this article by Zoerle and colleagues (among whom we can count Dr. Nino Stocchetti), published in July in Frontiers in Neurology. “Rethinking Neuroprotection in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: Toward Bedside Neuroprotection” starts off by… Continue reading Rethinking Neuroprotection in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: Toward Bedside Neuroprotection

SJTREM – Mortality Due to Traumatic SCI in Europe

This article, recently published by Majdan et al in the Scandinavian Journal of Trauma, Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine, provides an important collection of mortality data for traumatic spinal cord injury from all over Europe. Very few earlier studies have managed to offer such a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology of tSCI. This underscores its importance and makes… Continue reading SJTREM – Mortality Due to Traumatic SCI in Europe

Crash-3 has enrolled 9653 patients!

Crash-2 showed that TXA reduced mortality due to bleeding and all-cause mortality in trauma patients with extra cranial bleeding. The Crash-3 trial will provide reliable evidence about the effect of TXA on mortality and disability in patients with TBI. the effect of TXA on the risk of vascular occlusive vents and seizures will also be… Continue reading Crash-3 has enrolled 9653 patients!

NeuroScand at SAM 2017

Neuroscand’s Anders is attending Skandinavisk Akuttmedisin (Scandinavian Emergency Medicine) 2017 at Thon Airport hotel in Oslo. We were lucky enough to be invited to present our FOAMed experiences alongside brilliant speakers, such as Lars Didrik Flingtorp from NAKOS (nakos.no) and Niklas Jonsson (traumarummet.se and hemodynamik.se) from Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. The talks were followed… Continue reading NeuroScand at SAM 2017

New Norwegian Prehospital Spinal Injury Guidelines

Just published in the Scandinavian Journal of Trauma, Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine as an open-access article: The Norwegian guidelines for the prehospital management of adult trauma patients with potential spinal injury by Kornhall et al. The result of a critical review of the available evidence by a multidisciplinary group of clinicians, these guidelines wrestle with many of… Continue reading New Norwegian Prehospital Spinal Injury Guidelines

A Few Handy Resources on Airway Management

Patients with head- and neck injuries can have challenging airways. We often use videolaryngoscopes or flexible fibrescopes (single use scope) when performing intubation in such patients. Our colleagues in Copenhagen have put together a useful website with videos and other learning resources on that subject. They also arrange an annual  two-day airway course with a very extensive workshop. Read more… Continue reading A Few Handy Resources on Airway Management

More Brain Impact Apnoea

Brain impact apnoea causes secondary brain injury.  The duration of the apnoea reflects the energy in the injury. We often see these patients in our trauma center as they come intubated. CT-scan can reveal structural brain damage or bleeding. In some pastients the CT-scan is “normal”. However, the brain may have suffered hypoxic injuries undetectable with… Continue reading More Brain Impact Apnoea

HYBERNATUS Trial: Hypothermia Not Associated With Better Outcomes in Status Epilepticus

Results from the HYBERNATUS trial were just published in the New England Journal of Medicine by Legriel et al. This study recruited 270 patients with convulsive status epilepticus, randomized to either therapeutic hypothermia (32-34 C) or normothermia. All patients were intubated and on controlled ventilation when included. All received standard antiepileptic pharmacological treatment. Primary outcome… Continue reading HYBERNATUS Trial: Hypothermia Not Associated With Better Outcomes in Status Epilepticus
